Jacket
In some applications, jacket type may be mandated by the National Electric Code or by local fire codes. If unsure of jacket type, please call or e-mail for assistance or check with your local Fire Marshall.
PVC [Polyvinylchloride] - A general purpose jacket. PVC is the standard jacket for most communication cables. PVC jacketing is economical and highly durable, making it ideal for most standard applications.
Plenum - A fire resistant cable jacket, intended for the plenum spaces of public buildings (space reserved for the circulation of air in heating and air conditioning systems, usually below a raised floor or above a dropped ceiling). Plenum cables are manufactured to comply with National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) and National Electric Code (NEC) guidelines, with a fire retardant jacket that is slow-burning and emits little smoke during combustion. Using plenum rated jacketing helps to ensure the safety of personnel by reducing the spread of dangerous gases in the event of a fire.
LSZH [Low Smoke Zero Halogen] - LSZH jackets are composed of thermoplastic compounds that drastically reduce the amount of smoke emitted when exposed to high heat or fire, while completely eliminating the release of dangerous halogens associated with standard PVC jacketing. Benefits of LSZH jacketing include:
Drastically reduced smoke emission during combustion.
Zero halogen emission during combustion.
The added safety LSZH jacketing provides in the event of fire has made it the ideal choice for applications with confined spaces ranging from military bases, ships, and submarines, to hospitals, subway stations, and industrial facilities the world over.
OFNR Riser - Optical Fiber Nonconductive Riser (OFNR) cable is intended for vertical runs between floors or non-plenum applications.
OFNP Plenum - Optical Fiber Nonconductive Plenum (OFNP) cable is intended for horizontal runs within ceilings, air ducts, and where required by local fire code.
Indoor/Outdoor Riser - Indoor/Outdoor cable can withstand the strains of outdoor use including UV resistance but also meets the flammability requirements of indoor cables. Like OFNR riser cable, when using indoor/outdoor riser cable indoors, it is intended for vertical runs between floors or non-plenum applications.
Indoor/Outdoor Plenum - Indoor/Outdoor cable can withstand the strains of outdoor use including UV resistance but also meets the flammability requirements of indoor cables. Like OFNP plenum cable, when using indoor/outdoor plenum cable indoors, it is intended for horizontal runs within ceilings, air ducts, and where required by local fire code.
Aerial (Self-supporting) - Designed to be strung from poles outdoors, this cable has an internal stress member that protects the fibers from strain.
Direct Burial - Direct burial cable is intended for ducts or buried directly underground. It features an armor layer inside the jacket to help prevent damage.
